Mariah Smith touched base with SZA for the March issue of GQ shortly before the Ctrl songstress would attend the 60th Grammy awards, where she was nominated five times. After being shut out at the ceremony, GQ caught up with her again.
“You feel like you’re really falling short and you fucking failed [your fans],” she says. She admits to getting caught up in the accolades and recognition, and being brought back down to earth after her losses. “I can have an attitude and really take that shit an ugly-ass way and get caught up in the wrong moment and miss everything about it. Miss the whole blessing in it. But you gotta identify the ego so that you can get over it.”
Her sights are now on this summer’s Championship Tour, starring Kendrick Lamar and other members of the Top Dawg Entertainment roster. A month on from the Grammys she admits she loves and respects Alessia Cara – whose Best New Artist win was controversially received online – and that the experience in itself was amazing. “Everything about this is gratis for me because I didn’t expect any of this shit to happen. I was unpopular my whole life.” While she can now reflect on the experience positively, make no mistake, she did not enjoy it at the time. “Aw, I was mad as hell for a little while girl, don’t trip!”
