What up world, shouts out to all of Shive magazine’s viewers and fans. We are here with Michigan ’s own Rod B Gutta. Rod B is from the city streets of Detroit Michigan and has 10 years of hard work and dedication into this music industry. With in those 10 years he has opened up for some of the biggest names in music. Some of which includes, “Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Monica, Trina and many more. He’s also collaborated with artists like Royce Da 5’9, MC Breed, Proof, and Obie Trice just to name a few.
Shive: So tell us, How did you get the name, “Rod B Gutta”?
Rod B: Real name no gimmicks! Lol …nall…Rod comes from my government name. B is the first initial in my last name. Gutta is the environment in which I’m a product of Detroit slums in other words. Also, a Gutter saved me when I fell off the top porch when I was young. It caught my shirt and placed me safely on the steps. I had to rep that.
Shive: How did you here about Shive Magazine?
Rod B: I heard about Shive Magazine through Facebook actually! Shive’s promo game is crazy! Y’all everywhere! It was only right that we linked up. I’m honored to be interviewed by you guys. Y’all doing big things.
Shive: In the beginning, you were apart of two groups Side Show Productions/OtherSide and Live Action. At what point did you know it was time to go solo?
Rod B: Well, I was always a solo artist way before me and Earl Smoove formed Otherside before Live Action. Side Show was me and Earl Smoove’s production team. I went back solo after the Live Action dynasty collapsed when our CEO, K Mac had got indicted. Things just wasn’t the same when he got locked up. I mean the whole hood felt that loss. But yea, shout to K Mac welcome home boy! Shout to Since Day 1 and everybody from Live Action!
Shive: You opened up your solo career with,” Who iz Rod B” and continued with “Building Anticipation”. Why these for titles?
Rod B: No lie. I thought the “who is Mike Jones?” campaign was great marketing! When nobody really knows you first thing they gonna say is “WHO?” lol… Yep so I titled my first mixtape series that way strategically, to bring awareness as to who I am. And no! I did not steal the Mike Jones chant! Lol… Who?! Rod B! Who?! Rod B! … Nall lol is was tempting though. Shout to the boy Mike Jones and the boy DJ Sakrafice.
As for Building Anticipation, it took me about a year to give the people a new project after “Who iz Rod B? Reloaded”. So I felt like they were anticipating my next release. I took my time on purpose. Thus, I was building anticipation. Shout to the boy DJ Bruce Wayne! We went in!
Shive: What did you expect your viewers to get from these mixtapes and this album?
Rod B: I just wanted the fans and supporters to expect a breath of fresh air. I just want to draw more people to my music, my flow, my versatility and my story. That’s all.
Shive: What separates you from other emerging underground artists?
Rod B: I have knowledge of self, so that alone puts me in a different bracket. I’m also very passionate about unity. I’m original as well. Too many underground artists trying to rap like Gucci Mane etc. nowadays. Shout to Gucci and The whole BrickSquad…They made a lane. Artists have to make they own lanes.
Shive: I see you’re signed to Expat Records now. How did that come about?
Rod B: The A&R over there got wind of me and reached out. I felt that I couldn’t lose by taking the deal they offered. It actually was dope. Expat is home, we working. Shout to Izzy, Steve, Jeff and the whole staff.
Shive: What are you currently working on?
I got a few surprises that I can’t leak right now but, outside of those moves, I’m gearing up for the “Vengeance” EP release and the “Seize The Game” mixtape release. Lots of surprises after those though…get ready! Lol
Shive: What’s the Michigan Militia? Is it only for underground artist in Michigan or a world wide?
Rod B: Michigan Militia is a HipHop movement that I founded to create unity and a support base solely for all Michigan artists. Thus, every artist in the state and Michigan artists that may have relocated. We intend to be recognized world wide. Who ever is about unity and support let’s rock! Whether you from Michigan or not. We’re always willing to do business or collaborated with our positive peers and supporters. Salute to y’all!
Shive: How does Rod B Gutta market himself?
Rod B: I’m in the streets and I’m in the net. Heavy! I put projects out, I colab with other hungry artists. I do shows. I try to keep my name and face in the same places where the movers and shakers names and faces be at. I press hard copies, flyers etc! I just do what I can…
Shive: How can the viewers check out your music?
